I started teaching English at Olympia (WA) High School in the fall of 1962 and retired after 31 years in 1993. During about 25 of those years, I served as chairman of the department as well as teaching. I was prompted to retire when I found out I had bladder cancer. Fortunately, the cancer decided to retire as well. I go for annual checkups (nasty camera invasions) once a year, but so far there has been no return of the pesky tumors. In 1983,  I had a scary bout with melanoma so cancer is not my favorite mental image.
After I retired, I started working with incarcerated youth in a group home. There are 16 young men housed there ranging in age from 14-21. They are serving out the final phase of their juvenile sentences (from a few months to more than two years). Although the young men have been convicted of anything from theft to murder, we are able to get them in school and/or work in the community. My official title is case manager/administrator; however, my main function is counselor and loving grandfather. (Have you been able to adjust better than I have to apply such a hoary-headed, wrinkled image to yourself?) Time is a terrible thief. I wonder sometimes if I remain with the young just to fool myself. After all, vicarious experience can certainly be more satisfying at times then reality itself.

In renewed friendship,

Ken

8/2006...Ken has recently retired from his second job...and his wife told him he can do whatever he wants after he cleans their garage...but most of his family expect that will occupy him for decades.

I, like my bro Ken went to Western Washington State college and morphed into teachers.  I taught sixth/fifth graders for thirty years in Salem Oregon (first five years) then moved with wife, Margaret and two preschool children to Federal Way, WA and retired in 1992.  I have spent the last post retirement years in what I refer to as the perfect retirement doing just whatever I want to do.  My wife still works and I do when the spirit moves me...like every fall I make and sell ice cream cones at the three week Puyallup Fair.  Several years I reappeared in elementary classrooms in the district to help get some needed kids back on the educational track.  I play lots of Pickleball (a court game like tennis) and some may remember I did win the AHTNC tennis tournament there.  Our kids are both grown and married off and we just returned from NJ where our son Randy teaches science at Rutgers and produces the worlds most wonderful grandchildren for us to spoil when we see the family twice a year.

Question:  Is there any information on author Sam Astrachan?
Sam must have been at AHTNC 1958-1959

Obituary

Sunday, February 18, 2007

WILLIAM NELSON NICOLL, JR.

William Nelson Nicoll, Jr. of Prairie Village, KS passed away with grace and dignity on February 15th, 2007 in the presence of his loving wife and children.

William was born in Cleveland, OH on September 6, 1935 to Margaret and William Nicoll. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Margaret Eichenberg and Lucy Chandler. He is survived by his dear sister, Alice Neishloss and her husband, Eric of Pittsburgh, PA and Elizabeth Tatum of Se-bring, FL.

William was a member of the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge on Nov. 30, 1964.

In 1961 he married the love of his life, Nicole, who survives him. They are the proud parents of son, William Nicoll III, Sergeant First Class and his wife Lori of Topeka, KS; daughter Nancy Austin and her husband Mark, of Villabe, France; and daughter Dr. Mary Patterson of Overland Park, KS. William was a devoted grandfather to William Alan Austin, Andrew Ryan Nicoll, Luke Asher Austin, Amy Nicole Austin, Hannah Grace Patterson, and Paige Noelle Nicoll.

William worked for TWA from 1961 until his retirement in 1996. He and his wife were avid travelers, taking their children all over the world. He volunteered at the Church of St. Ann. He collected old radios and radio memorabilia. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones. His smile, his wit, and his intelligence brightened the lives of those around him. May he enjoy the eternal reward of his savoir, Jesus Christ.  Private services will be held at Sanctuary of Hope Retreat Center of Kansas City, KS. (Arr: Cremation Society of Kansas and Missouri, 913-383-9888).
